Listen and listen carefully here. It‟s a normal thing for Custom duties to be charged on imported goods. It happens all over the world. Ideally, custom duties to be charged on goods can never be more than 20% of the price of the goods imported. If you must pay custom duties, be sure to know this fact. The custom duties are calculated based on the cost of the goods bought. If your goods are worth $1000, you mustn‟t pay more than $200 for custom duties. We can totally avoid payment of custom duties. Legally! How? Custom duties are charged on goods not meant for personal use. Also, custom duties are not meant to be collected on goods which are less than $300 in value. Not a law but it‟s normal because the Customs‟ eyes wouldn‟t be on goods with less value.

Here is the trick to use when buying from aliexpress. During conversation with seller after you have bought the goods, instruct the seller to devalue the cost of the goods. Take for example, I bought 10 pieces of Tablet pcs and it‟s worth $540. I may instruct the seller to declare it as worth $270. Why do I have to do this? If at all I will be unlucky and the Custom wants to charge duties on the goods, I will be charged duties based on the cost price of $270. I might end up paying less than $40 as custom
duties. Another trick is this; if your orders aren‟t much. Maybe like just 5pieces of an item or less, you may instruct the seller to declare as “free samples”. This means you never paid for them and were only sent to you for free in order to test them. Yes! You might want to test and if they meet your
expectation, you can go back and order in bulk from the seller.

Once goods are declared as “free samples”, and they are just few quantities, Customs often overlook them. Lastly, you can instruct your seller to send your goods in batches. If for example, you ordered for 100 pieces of t-shirts, you can instruct the seller to send them to you in 10 batches of 10 pieces each. This can be done over some days. If you do this, you will escape paying custom duties on your imported goods. Take all above tips seriously and you will save yourself some good cash.

Receiving Your Orders in Nigeria

Let me quickly point it out here that when ordering from aliexpress, there are 4 major shipping companies that we will be receiving our goods from. They are;

1 DHL
2 China Post Air Mail
3 Ems and,
4 Hongkong Post

Among them all, DHL is the best.
If your order is shipped with DHL, you will receive it in Nigeria within 3 – 6days. There are no much issues with customs or any government agencies when you use DHL. China post is also one of the best if not for the fact that the shipping is slower.

With China post, you should expect your goods within 14days – 20days. When the goods come, they are received at the nearest post office to you address. The postman is supposed to bring it directly to your door steps but, this is Nigeria. I will advice you just go ahead to the post office yourself, give them your tracking number and drop your phone number. Make sure you be friend with one of them. With that, they will ring you when your goods arrive. Bear in mind that they will ask for money. Give it to them so as to keep good relationship. But never give more than what will hurt your pocket. #500 is the basic post office charge but, you may give them like #1,500 and maintain close relationship with one of them for future transactions.

EMS. Please try to avoid them totally. When your goods come around, they will expect you to pay some outrageous amount of money to receive your goods. Besides, they work hand-in-hand with some foolish custom officials who will hand you bills to pay to clear your goods.

Hong Kong Post is also okay since it will come through the post office.

My personal best is DHL (not often available for FREE SHIPPING items) and China post Airmail. All I need to do about China post since is kind of late is to ensure that goods I want to sell next month, I will order for them this month.

OPENING DISPUTE

One good thing about aliexpress is the fact that buyers are given protection against scams. There is a measure in which the money we pay for the goods we ordered is sent directly to aliexpress‟ account and not directly to the seller. It‟s when we have received the goods and we confirm that we have received the goods and it meets our expectation will the money be released to the seller. This is what we call ESCROW on aliexpress. Any website that uses ESCROW has a high level of security against fraud.
It has never happened to me before but it once happened to one of my students who bought a laptop and the laptop was not exactly as described. He returned the laptop and he got a full refund.

Just fill out the form shown above. I must also tell you that the address that you should put will be your home address, the address you have on your bank debit card. This will help in saving you against a lot of stress from Nigerian agencies like NDLEA that will check your package when it comes. These agencies are only interested in verifying that you own the package and that you did not fraud anyone. So you will be requested to provide proof of ownership of package, once you submit a government issued ID card e.g driver‟s license or national id card, your bank debit card with your name on it and your proof of purchase from myus.com, your goods will be released to you.

You won‟t even need to go to their office, you just have to forward it to DHL who will do that on your behalf. Once you click on send my package, it will show some options for packaging instructions. You can set this up by going to shipping preferences. You really don‟t need to change anything in your shipping preferences except if you want to give special instructions. If your address is untraceable or you feel that it will be more convenient for you to pick up the package at a DHL office close to you, when requesting for shipment, you should put the recipient‟s address as in care of DHL, that DHL address and you can walk into the office to pick up the package when it arrives Nigeria.

Once you have placed a shipment request, it will be processed that same day and you will be provided a tracking link in your email address or you can simply go to order history to get the link.

Shipping through DHL takes averagely 2-4 working days, I normally get my packages in 3 working days though.

The Secret Behind Using Other People‟s Money To Start Your Importation Business.

I talked about this method in my sales page. It involves throwing in offer that reseller cannot resist.

To perfect this method, I recommend you get a sample of the product you wish to sell to them first. Yes, go order for 2 to 5 pieces as samples. With your sample copies, approach the sellers and ask them how much they could buy the product in bulk from you. Let‟s say the product goes for N500/piece at the import portal. The seller agrees to pay N1500/piece… The next thing is to bring in the kicker. Tell the seller you‟re ready to supply the items to them at N1000/piece on one condition.

… And that condition should be that they pay half or one-third of the money in advance, depending on how much profit you‟re going to be making and balance up once goods are delivered. Just make sure the amount they pay in advance covers the cost of importing the stuff.

If they agrees, and pay you half of the money for example (which is N750), you simply go and place order for the product… and make some profits (N250) even before the product arrives and you getting the balance. Seriously, don‟t expect this method to be an easy ride. It requires some sort of preaching and packaging… you can always add your own twist to widen your chances. In my case, one in about twelve persons took me up on this method. The idea should be, if you‟re just starting and looking to raise some funds to finance your importation business, this method fits in. It should work best on people you already have some sort of relationship with – your colleagues, friends, family members etc.

I believe by now, you must have been imbued with the tricks and tips to being a stake holder in Importation business in Nigeria. Having learnt where and how to order for goods from abroad and getting safe delivery here in Nigeria, the next and most important now is;

How you are going to be selling the products right here in Nigeria. Marketing your imported goods is the most important since selling the goods is what will make us earn our profit. Like I always say, Nigeria is a consuming nation. There is nothing you import to this country that you wouldn‟t get buyers for in as much as you know how to market. If you think you aren‟t a marketing type, these marketing tips I shall give you here will be more than enough for you to sell hundreds of pieces of
any imported goods. These are the various ways through which you can market your imported goods in Nigeria to ensure you sell off your goods within 10days;

1. HANDBILLS/FLYERS

Trust me; this is the most potent marketing strategy for selling imported goods. Believe me, if you use this method appropriately, you will easily reach your target audience. With this, you can sell 100 pieces of just any good product within 10days with this method. This is what to do. You must have identified a product from either aliexpress or ebay and ensure that the product is available from different sellers. I prefer aliexpress products for this method. I would have identified a seller and discuss with him that I might need several hundreds of pieces. Once the source is curtained, just import like 2 pieces of the items as samples. Once the samples are satisfactory to you, take snapshots of the product or get the snapshot from the seller‟s page. Get the details of the product like specifications, functions etc. Just a summary/description of what the product does /functions. Be creative and use this to create your handbill/flyer. To print as much as 2000 pieces of flyers, you will spend between #6,000 and #10,000 depending on your location. When printing flyers like this, I go for quality prints. Do not go for 2 colours. Go for full colours and use something like glossy paper. This send message to the potential buyer who comes across your flyer that you are real and got quality products. Having printed the flyers, go to public places like eateries, banks, parks, churches‟ notice boards etc. Place some pieces of the flyers somewhere in there. Never distribute the flyers coz it makes you look desperate. Place the flyer somewhere and whoever picks it up is obviously interested. Need I tell you that the images of the product should be printed very large on the handbill and include other details. See sample to guide you. It doesn‟t mean you should create yours exactly as this. It‟s just a specimen to guide you… The great thing about flyers is that you will be able to get it down to where your targeted audience lives. If for example, you live in a campus‟ hostel and your product targeted female students (maybe you imported handbags or women wrist-watches etc). You can print flyers and get someone to help you slip it under the doors of all the rooms in the hostel. That‟s just an idea. Be creative and flyers will bring in several sales. Take the sample I just gave you below. If you order 10 pieces of the tablet pc at the rate of $52 each, that‟s $520 in all. You can even get discount from the seller and may pay less. $540 is around #84,000. If you spend #10,000 to create and distribute about 2000 pieces of flyers, total cost will be around #94,000. The product can easily be sold for #16,000 each and this will make you #160,000. This leaves a profit of #66,000. If you do this rightly, you can achieve this in less than 10days. Think about this fact.

2. Selling to Sellers.

This is a very potent and works like the talisman. All you need to do is to approach a seller of a product. Take for example, you know guys that sell phones, you know salons that sell Brazilian hairs, you know an aboki that sell wrist watches, go to a shoe seller etc. Think of just any product. Walk up to the seller and ask for the price of the product. Go online and search for the same product or even better one. You surely will get the product cheaper than what they sell in Nigeria. Take for example, assuming you see some pieces of wrist watches that sell for #5,000 in Nigeria from the seller, if you go online and search on ebay or aliexpress, you can get such goods for as cheap as #2,000 or less.
Buy like 2 or 3 pieces as samples.

Take it to the seller in Nigeria and tell him that you can supply the exact product to him for like #3,500 or #3,000 depending on your bargaining power. Once you agree on price on quantity. Go into action and place orders. Once the order comes, go straight to the seller, deliver to him and get your cash. Chikeina! Imagine you have 10 of such sellers that you supply different products. Assuming you can make up to #60,000 profit from each supply to each Customer in a month, that‟s #600,000 across the 10 sellers. Think outside the box. This is very feasible. You can make even much more than that. Let this keep ringing in your hear… “Nigeria is a consuming Nation”. There is nothing you import that wouldn‟t sell in as much as you can market them.

3. Facebook Marketing

Facebook is very huge. There are several millions of Nigerians on facebook and this is a great opportunity for us to use facebook to sell our imported products. There are 2 ways to using facebook to sell our imported goods. These include free and paid ways. The free include posting the images of your products directly on your facebook wall as an update. Here is an example from my brother here …

This is a post on the facebook wall of Oseun advertising his imported wrist watches. He‟s my brother and I can boldly tell you that he bought 5 pieces of the wrist watches for just $27 (#4,120) he paid #1000 to the postman at the post office when he went to collect his parcel. Total spent is #5,120. He sold all the wrist watches for #15,000 (#3,000 each). That‟s a profit of #9,880. Over 200% profit.

Had it been he bought 25 pieces of these wrist watches, he could have spent just #20,000 to get them all to Nigeria. Selling at #3,000 each, he could have made over #50,000 in pure profit. That‟s the fact! Importation business can be started with as little as #10,000 and still make good profit.
Come and see how people rushed the wrist watch. He sold the 5 pieces in less than 3 days. You know what he did? He told people that the wrist watches were sent to him from UK by his Friend. Lol.

4. Newspaper Advert

A classified advert in a newspaper cost less than #10,000 and you stand a chance of reaching to several hundreds of potential buyers of your product. The space given is so small and as such you need to coin your sales word creatively. An image of the product is also very important. Give the price and your phone number for further inquiry. Pick up the National dailies and look through them to see how this is done. Inside the Newspapers, you will see the contact of the advert department too. Ring them up and make inquiries about placing classified advert with them.

5. Joint Venturing with shop owners

Some places are established commercial centers. Guess you understand my point. If you happen to know of such places that are centre of commerce in your city and you cannot afford to get a shop/office in there because of cost and other engagement, you can partner with a shop owner.
It doesn‟t matter what the shop owner sells. Walk up to the person and have an arrangement with him/her. Show him/her what you sell and have a discussion that you should be given a space in the shop to display the product and make the shop owner know that he/she will be given certain amount of money on every x amount of item sold from her/her shop. This address can even be used as pick-up centre when creating flyers. With this, you wouldn‟t need to run down to deliver your product at all time when you have an order. Just be sure to include the extra cost on the product‟s price.

If you‟ve got goods for sale, just keep updating to your facebook wall with it. Add the image of the product and write one or two lines of words like the one above. You will be surprised how people will call you for ordering details.

Tagging your friends when you post updates about your products ensure that friends to your friends also see your update. Take for example, you have 1000 facebook friends. When you post updates about your product regularly, there is high likelihood that 50% of your facebook friends will see your update. That‟s promotion to around 500 people. But, do you know that you can reach like 10,000 people using “tagging” on facebook? How? You update the image of the product you have for sale and you tag 20 of your friends who have like 1500 friends on the average. All friends to your tagged friends will see the update. That‟s like promotion to around 30,000 people. If just 30% of this figure sees your update, that‟s 9000 plus your own 1000. This reaching around 10,000 people. Trust me, if what you have for sale is not an expensive item, you will make sales easily using this technique.

6. Recruiting Resellers

If you utilize this judiciously, it definitely will make you so much money from importation business. I have identified some places where people always go to and I always to use the opportunity to reach out to them through the people they do go to. A barber‟s shop will boast of at least 300 customers and possibly over 500 visitors in a month. The same for a Hair Dresser‟s Salon. Even beer parlour/joints are no exemptions. Also viewing centers where you go to watch your favourite football clubs‟ matches.

You can walk up to the person in charge of any of these shops and have a deal with them. Go online and get the products that will fit your target market (Brazilian hairs, cosmetics, wrist watches, chains, bags etc will fit for the women). Buy the products and give to the shop owner to sell for you to their customers. The deal should cater for the shop owner to share part of your profit. Let‟s assume you imported leather belts at just #600 each and sold for #2000 to the customers of a Barbing Salon, you may agree #500 share on each item sold by the Barber. If he sells 10 items in a
month, he gets #5000 and you make #9,000. Imagine you have 15 of such people selling for you. Yours will be to deposit the items with them and come back for your cash when they have
sold them. Just be sure to deal with trust worthy people who wouldn‟t sell and never give you your money. The football viewing centers too. Having just 10 of them is enough to be earning you over #200,000 in profit monthly from importation business. The advice is that, you should import different items monthly that you are sure will satisfy these set of people.

7. Rent an Office

Some people wouldn‟t be comfortable with the idea of ordering from you and waiting for you to send the item to them through courier if they are far away from you. Some will even harbor fears that you want to dupe them. Therefore, it‟s always good to have a physical office/shop where we can point people to come and buy our goods from. If you are serious about importation business, it‟s worth getting an office for and importing as many products as people will be interested in. This is a business that will bring you more money than you will ever dream of. Spend some of your earnings to acquire an office and brand yourself.

Ensure that you give your best to delivering quality products at competitive prices.
